This ficlet is based on the Dierks Bentley song "What Was I Thinking," which I heard on the radio the other day for the first time in ages and I just couldn't get the Fire & Ice out of my head...I highly recommend listening to the song before (or while!) reading this fic; it really gives you the right tone. Enjoy!

Draco snatched the letter away, barely glancing at the owl. There was no envelope, only a hastily scrawled note in that long, curvy script. His eyes glittered as he scanned the words. It was eleven o'clock now; if they were caught it was his neck on the line...

But Draco obviously wasn't thinking that night.

He was on his broom in a second and racing through cool summer air across the countryside.

Her father had proved himself in battles against Death Eaters to be a more than competent wizard--and of course, a temper that took him from threatening to dangerous in .2 seconds...and weren't those twin brothers home? And Ron, who had faced Voldemort personally, and Percy, who worked for the ministry and Charlie the dragon trainer...

Draco obviously wasn't thinking.

He was there in twenty minutes, swooping down to her darkened window. She was waiting, wearing cut-off shorts and a little white tank top and her hair loose and tumbling over her shoulders and back. She approached the window and tugged it up--it wasn't coming easily--and then finally it slid all the way and banged loudly at the top.

"Ginny!"

The door behind her burst open and there was Ron and Arthur, silhouettes in the doorframe. Ginny grabbed onto Draco's shoulders and hoisted herself up behind him on the broom as the two red-haired men ran after her, wands waving wildly--Ron yelled again and there were figures on the lawn now and the tail of Draco's Nimbus was smoldering and he felt burning rubber from his shoes, and Draco leaned forward, only feeling her leaning against his back and her arms around his chest and they tore out Ottery St. Catchpole in record time.

"Draco," Ginny breathed, giggling a little. "What are you thinking?"

He turned his head to see her resting her chin on his shoulder. He had a slightly dazed look in his eyes before he finally leaned farther and kissed her hard and long, and the broom swerved and dipped and she broke the kiss not laughing but giving him a hard, blazing look that he loved--

A red jet of light shot underneath them and they heard the yells behind them.

"Let's go!" Ginny said, her hands clenched firmly on his chest.

"Charlie isn't on a dragon, is he?" Draco asked loudly over the rush of wind.

She laughed. "No, just a Nimbus."

Draco glanced up. Damn, he didn't want to get them both wet--well, actually--

He pulled up quickly into the cloud and Ginny shrieked as the mist surrounded them, chilling them to the bone. She pulled herself closer to Draco and the only thing that kept him from getting out of that cloud as soon as possible was the image of what her white tank top would look like afterwards.

The yelling was growing louder--the mist was dragging Draco's broom--and Ginny yelled, "Faster!" and Draco gunned it, leaning forward as much as possible with her on his back.

There were lights shining through the cloud to their right and Draco made the turn and dive without thinking. Ginny was yelling in his ear, whooping as they descended into London. Draco found Diagon Alley quickly, knowing that he'd lost the brothers for now, at least. They landed behind Gringotts and he pulled her along to a small shop she'd seen only in the daytime and had ignored. A man in a dark red cloak took Draco's broom and a Galleon as they passed through the doorway into the nightclub within. Draco walked backwards onto the dance floor, unable to look away from Ginny, who was trying to arrange her hair over her soaked front, and he pulled her close, running his hands through her hair and pushing it away and leaning in to smell the floral scent the rain brought out...

The adrenaline pumping through Draco's veins hadn't calmed down slightly since he'd first read that note an hour ago and now, when Ginny was pulled away by some rough hand on her shoulder and some deep voice asking-without-really-asking to cut in, he saw literal red before throwing his punch. Ginny squealed and the man pulled his hands from Ginny to his bloody mouth.

Draco grabbed Ginny's wrist and they both ran from the club, Draco doubling back for his Nimbus. When he left the club finally he was flying, the man with the bloody mouth running behind. Ginny grabbed Draco's shoulders as he slowed near her and pulled herself up and they sped back up into the sky.

Draco wasn't thinking...he was feeling.

There was no sign of the brothers on their way back. Determined to do something sensible, he planned to return her directly to the Burrow. But as they landed at the front gate there were the twins both sitting on the front stoop, and they yelled and charged. Draco gripped his broom tightly and looked wide-eyed at Ginny. And she gave a come-and-get-me grin...and like a bullet they were gone again!

Cuz I was thinking 'bout a little white tank top sitting right there in the middle by me

I was thinking 'bout a long kiss, man, just gotta get going where the night might lead

Well, I know what I was feeling...

But what was I thinking?
