Chapter 2

The Sun Shines Out of her Ass

I began to get used to this over the next few weeks, allowing it to become a fact of life. Thank God I'm a metamorphmagus so I was at least able to prevent myself from blushing every time she poked me or I had to grab her to hold her back off someone. I tried hard to prevent myself from staring at her at every opportunity, but I wasn't always successful.

"Teddy! Stop staring at me!" she said, annoyed.

"I'm not staring at you."

"Than what are you staring at?"

"I'm just staring into space."

"Why does 'Space' always seem to be my face for you lately?"

I didn't have a good answer to that. I quickly thought up the lamest of excuses.

"Well...you're...always right in front of me so..." I trailed off. She looked skeptical. I quickly returned to my astronomy homework. She wrote another sentence in her DADA essay. We were in the fifth-year boy's dormitory, laying side by side on my bed, on our stomachs with our feet on my pillows like we had a million times before. Victoire was currently dating Kevin Laughlin, the a Hufflepuff beater, but she made sure he understood that if he wanted to go out with her, which he did, of course, I was part of the deal. She would still spend large blocks of her time with me. All of her boyfriends so far had agreed.

We worked in silence for a while before she stood up. "I've got to go. I'm meeting Kevin."

I nodded.

"Hello Theodore!" came an overly deep and jokingly formal voice.

"Shut up!" I replied, "My name isn't even Theodore!"

"Details, details," she said flopping down into the armchair next to me so that her head was on the armrest closest to me and her knees were hooked over the other. "So wazup my home dizzle?"

"Stop trying to be American."

She snorted. I looked at her and immediately got lost in her exquisite blue eyes. Oops.

"Theodore? Theodore?" she called. "TEDDY!"

I looked up. "Huh?"

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Like what?"

"Like Kevin looks at me. And like every boyfriend I've ever had looked at me. Like guys look when I'm dazzling them."

I didn't know what to say. I settled for looking confused.

"Like the sun shines out of my ass," she elaborated.

I snorted a moment too late.

"Oh god!" She said. "You in love with me!"

"What? No! Of course not!"

"Yes you are! I thought you were different Teddy! I thought maybe there was one guy in the world who would like me for more than a pretty face!"

"Of course I like you for more than a pretty face. But not like THAT!" I could feel my face turning beet-red but I couldn't seem to bring myself to change it back to normal.

"Shut up Teddy. Shut up before I jinx you," she said, quietly, in a voice she reserved for when she was about to pound the pulp out of someone. I took her advice. She picked up her bag and stalked out of the common room, up to her dorm. She must really hate me if she's willing to go up there.
