I got the idea for this story from a line Captain Jean-Luc Picard says in Star Trek: Nemesis.

I Wait For the Dawn

General Harry Potter paced around the small office inside his headquarters. During his graduation from Hogwarts, Voldemort had attacked the school with an army of 10,000 strong. His attack had killed several people, including Harry's best friend, Ron Weasly. The castle now lay in ruins, and the Order of the Phoenix was being badly beaten. Harry has risen through the ranks quickly and assumed command. But now Voldemort was not the only thing Harry had to fear. His wife and long time friend, Hermione Granger, was having a baby, and Harry was afraid to bring the baby up in this world. For not only was the wizarding world at war, so was the muggle. The United States and Britain were embroiled in a long and costly war with Iraq and North Korea. It was probably only a matter of time before it escalated into a full fledged world war. Harry sighed. I seemed the world would never see peace again. Suddenly, Harry was pulled out of his reverie by a knock on the door.

"General Potter, sir," said the breathless messenger the second he entered the room, "It is almost dawn."

Harry nodded and replied "Thank you, Corporeal."

This had been the only weakness Voldemort's army had had. Made up mostly of orc like creatures, similar to those in J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, they became very weak in bright light. They normally attacked at night when the men were all asleep. This had cost the army more men then it could afford. The deserters didn't help any. Harry shook his head and walked outside. Sure enough, the sky was beginning to lighten, but it would be another hour or so before dawn. Harry knew an orc army was just over the next hill. They were going to attack just as the sun rose, when the orcs would be looking for a place to hide from the light. Suddenly, and without warning, explosions filled the air. The same corporeal who had delivered Harry the last message shouted to him.

"The orcs are attacking, sir! We don't know how many there are, but we don't have enough men to fight them all. We have to retreat!"

"NO!!" Harry shouted. "We have to stay and fight. They invade or towns and we fall back. They kill the entire populations in those towns and we fall back. Well, I'm tired of running."

The battle didn't last long. Harry's troops were able to push the orcs back, but at a terrible price. The orcs were now beginning another attack. Harry was forced to pull back. Dawn was now springing up on the horizon, and reinforcements had arrived. The orcs had fallen back, and were beginning to hide.

Harry looked out at his crestfallen and angry troops. Many had lost friends in the last assault and were now roaring for revenge. They will have it, too, Harry thought. Like a thousand other commanders on a thousand other battle fields, I wait for the dawn.
