Chapter One

Sixteen-year-old Hermione Granger was lying in her bed in the Gryffindor girls' dormitory room daydreaming. Hermione had a lot of homework and knew she should be concentrating on it but she couldn't get this one boy out of her head.

Hermione sighed happily, thinking about him. She knew, however, that it was wrong to think about him. One of her best friends, Harry Potter, hated him. He was Harry's arch rival. Ron Weasley also hated him, Harry's other best friend.

Ron.

Ron had confessed his feelings for Hermione a couple of days ago and asked if she would be his girlfriend, but Hermione couldn't accept. As much as she didn't want to hurt Ron's feelings, she was not in love with him. She was in love with someone else. But of course, she did not say that. She just told Ron that she needed some time to think about it.

Now Ron was bugging her all the time, asking her if she would accept his question in being his girlfriend. She kept telling him that she needed more time. That only got Ron mad. He was starting to get suspicious, she knew. But why couldn't he just leave her alone? Couldn't he see that she didn't think he was the one for her?

Suddenly, Lavender Brown came into the room. Lavender was the same age as Hermione and was in all of her classes because she was in Gryffindor. "Hello, Hermione," Lavender said, getting her hairbrush from her dresser. Lavender started combing her long brown hair.

"Hello, Lavender," Hermione replied in a daze. She just could not stop thinking about him.

"I heard Ron asked you to be his girlfriend," Lavender started, gazing at herself in the mirror as she combed her hair. "He's really popular. After all, he is Harry's best friend...what did you say? Spill it."

Hermione sighed. "I told Ron I needed some time to think about it," she replied.

Lavender looked shocked. "What?" she exclaimed. "Gosh...if Ron had asked me to be his girlfriend I would've said yes right away! I would not have waited a single second."

"You only like Ron because he's famous," Hermione said.

Lavender shrugged. "So?"

"So, that's wrong," Hermione answered. "It means you're taking him for granted."

Lavender snorted. "Humph! Like that really means anything..."

Hermione wished Lavender would go away. She liked Lavender, but sometimes Lavender acted like a real snob, and now Hermione just wanted to be alone so she could continue daydreaming about her one true love.

Luckily, Lavender soon got really bored and left the room. Now Hermione was alone again. She was also lucky that boys were not allowed in the girls' dormitory, so she did not have to face Ron, who was downstairs in the common room with Harry.

Hermione stared up at the ceiling, and pretty soon, she had fallen asleep.

Meanwhile, in the Slytherin House, Draco Malfoy was also thinking about someone special. His best friends, Crabbe and Goyle, were trying to talk to him, but he wasn't listening. He wasn't hearing a word they were saying. Instead, he kept daydreaming of a girl he was in love with. The last girl anyone would ever expect him to fall for.

Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted when Pansy Parkinson walked up to him. "Hello, Draco. I was wondering if our date was still on for tonight." Draco was dating Pansy, and he used to like her. But something about this other girl made him stop liking Pansy.

Now he just found Pansy to be annoying.

"Um, oh yeah, about that date tonight, Pansy. I um, have a lot of homework to do in the library so I guess we'll have to cancel the date," Draco replied.

Pansy looked hurt. "Oh! Well, okay then. I've got some homework to do too and maybe I'll join you in the library?"

Draco shook his head. "I actually kind of want to work in the library alone tonight," he told her. Now Pansy looked more hurt then ever. But she didn't say anything more as she left.

He just couldn't let Pansy know that he's fallen in love with someone else.

Someone, who he knew he shouldn't.
