CHAPTER ONE

Fifteen-year-old Harry Potter couldn't wait to go back to Hogwarts. He was so sick and tired of living with the Dursleys that he couldn't wait to go back to school. Most kids his age loved summer vacations, but Harry hated them.

He only had a week left at the Dursleys before he would be summoned back to school. The week before, he and his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, had gone shopping for their new school supplies in Diagon Alley.

Now Harry was all packed and had everything ready to go.

Harry was in his bedroom with the door closed, but he could hear his Uncle Vernon screaming at his cousin Dudley for sneaking more junk food again. Dudley was supposed to be on a diet (he was almost as big as a killer whale!), but Dudley kept sneaking more junk food anyway, which only made his parents angry with him.

"I thought I told you, Dudley not to eat that piece of cake!" Uncle Vernon roared.

"But I'm hungry, Dad!" Dudley whined.

"Well, then have a small salad!" Uncle Vernon answered.

"But that's not a real snack!" Dudley complained. "How come Harry gets to eat whatever he wants?"

Uncle Vernon must have said something in a quiet voice because Harry couldn't hear it, but the next thing he heard was Dudley crying. When Dudley cried, he used to be able to make his parents feel sorry for him and he'd get his own way. But now, they didn't fall for his crying act.

Uncle Vernon and Dudley were bickering until supper, when Dudley was too busy eating to talk. He just kept giving his father nasty looks instead.

After supper, Harry announced that he was going out for a walk...he wanted to get away from all the noise. While out walking, Harry suddenly stopped when he noticed something shiny and gold on the ground a few feet away from him.

Harry looked down and picked it up. It was a small gold ring. There were letters all around the outside of the ring which he could not read because it was in a different language. It was a strange ring, nothing like he'd ever seen before. And when he held it, he felt a strange sense of power in his body.

As Harry tried on the ring, the ground started shaking...almost like an earthquake. There was a bright flash of white light, and Harry was blinded. He couldn't see a thing. When the light cleared, Harry was no longer on Privet Drive.

Instead, he was in another world.

Harry had fallen on the ground. Picking himself up, he brushed himself off and gazed around. Harry was in a world surrounded by trees. A long, clear blue snake-like river was flowing to the North. Green grass seemed to stretch out for miles. Off in the distance, he could hear a soft chirping noise that sounded like a bird.

"Where am I?" he muttered to himself, walking around in a circle. "Hello! Is anybody here?" He waited but nobody came for him. "This is strange..."

Suddenly, what looked as though it had appeared out of nowhere, a narrow, dirt-road path came into view. Maybe this is the way out of here, Harry thought to himself. So without anywhere else to go, Harry started walking down the path.

It seemed like hours and hours as he was walking, and he was going uphill. When he finally reached the top of the hill, he looked about. He could see the entire land. All of the rolling, green hills, the tree tops, the river, everything. And the mountains in the background.

He was standing inside what looked like an old, runt-down, ancient building. It was made out of some sort of strange stone. The ceiling had caved in so there was no ceiling and some of the walls had fallen down.

"You're not from around here, are you?" said a soft voice from behind him. Harry turned around and saw the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. She was tall, with long curly golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Her skin was creamy white and she was wearing a long, silky white gown. Attached to her back was a pair of beautiful, pearl-white giant wings. And she was carrying a wand in her hand.

Harry stared at her, unable to speak. Finally, he said, "Uh-huh." And nodded his head with his mouth still hanging open.

The woman smiled. "My name is Marigold. This planet is my home. What's your name?"

"Um, Harry. And I want to go home...but I don't know how."

"There is a way," Marigold said. "But it's very dangerous. Many men have tried but they all perished to death before they could reach it. In the far North end of Furlong, there is a huge hidden Crystal Chamber. There, you must go into the chamber and find the one Crystal that will send you home when you touch it. But I must warn you, you will need to use all the strength and power you have to retrieve it. If you are willing to go, then I shall start you off."

Harry nodded. "Yes," he replied. "I'm ready to go."

"Very well, then," Marigold replied. She raised her wand at Harry, and in an instant, he had vanished.
