There was always an element of truth behind every lie. And behind every joke cracked, there was always an element of insecurity. Hermione had teased Harry about his friendship with Luna for months. It started soon after Harry and Hermione had celebrated their one-year anniversary. They had a lot in common, Harry and Luna. Hermione was deathly afraid that Harry would leave her. Harry and Hermione had broken up a few months later, and although Harry swore that Luna wasn't the cause, Hermione was both heartbroken and jealous.

They had vowed to remain friends, and although their relationship was mostly physical, they still talked late into the night. Hermione had never given up hope that one day Harry would come back to her. But the fact that Hermione was studying far away from Harry, Ron, and Luna made her nervous. Hermione could only get away from work and school every other week, which meant that she saw Harry only one out of every fourteen days. Hermione knew that Harry hung out with Ron and Luna frequently. Ron was madly in love with Luna, and everyone knew it. Hermione knew Harry was a loyal friend, that he would never intentionally hurt Ron. But Harry was a man, and men were not known for holding in their feelings.

But for the moment, Hermione had tried to put all thoughts of Luna Lovegood out of her mind. She had come to visit Harry. They had gone out to dinner and seen a movie. They had taken a walk through the neighborhood laughing and enjoying each other's company. Sometimes they met up with Ron and Luna. As they arrive back at Harry's apartment, Hermione knew was lay in store for the rest of the night. They would continue to chat about their respective lives and trade insults jovially, and then Harry would thoroughly seduce her. They would spend an incredible night in bed together before eventually drifting off to sleep. In the morning Harry would leave for work, and Hermione would take off soon after. She had the routine down after months of it.

It upset her a great deal of the time that she couldn't ask Harry how he felt about the break-up. It upset her that she couldn't bear to know the answers to her questions in fear of them being something she didn't want to hear. But mostly, it upset her that Harry knew exactly how she felt about Luna and didn't seem to take her insecurities into consideration. Rather, he poked fun at her pain often, and although Harry didn't know it, Hermione often lay awake and cried after Harry drifted off to bed. She had tried to ask him once if the nights he spent with Luna were the same as the nights he spent with her. Harry had known immediately what she had meant, but he had rolled his eyes at her and laughed, calling her paranoid and not answering her question.

Hermione arrived at Harry's flat for the night. It had been well over a year since they had broken up. Hermione had accepted the fact that she may never be Mrs. Harry Potter, but she had never given up hope. Harry was her true love, and she clung desperately to the fact that Harry hadn't asked anyone to be his girlfriend. Harry opened the door and smiled at her. He opened his arms for a hug, and she obliged, inhaling the familiar scent of his body and his soap and his cologne. He kissed her cheek in greeting before grabbing his jacket off of the coat hanger and heading out the door.

"Hermione... there is something I need to tell you." He looked at her and hesitated before carrying on. "There's someone else. I didn't want to say anything until I was sure because I didn't want to hurt you or confuse anyone else."
Hermione closed her eyes and winced as she felt her heart break again. She felt her eyes cloud with tears, but was brave enough to look up at Harry and smile at him. "Is it Luna?" she asked.

"I guess I've never been able to hide anything from you. If it was anyone else, I would wonder how you figured it out before I did, but then again you've always been the smartest person I know." He looked down at her, her shoulders quivering as she sobbed. "Hermione, don't cry. I know it hurts, but it is how I feel, and I know I could have told you before you came all the way here, but it's something I thought I should tell you in person. You understand, don't you?"

Hermione drew in a breath and nodded. "I guess so. I mean, I shouldn't even be surprised. You've been breaking my heart for a year now, Harry. It was only to be expected that you go ahead and break it again."

A pained expression formed on Harry's face. "I'm just telling you how I feel."

Hermione ignored his statement. "I guess there's only one question I have to ask you." He looked at her curiously and opened his mouth to speak, but Hermione cut him off. "Do you want me to say I told you so now or later?" She shook her head and wiped her tears away. "I'll always love you, Harry James Potter," she told him, standing on her tip-toes to kiss his cheek before leaving him and walking in the opposite direction. "Good-bye."
