A/N: I disclaim everything that is JK and anything I use of JK's from this time forward.

************

October 31, 1981

Many events took place on this night. One of the most important that will go down in wizarding world history was the event which happened at Godric's Hollow. However, this event will not be talked of at present.

Also on this night, a young man whose life was going to be tied to the aforementioned event was in his house, on tenterhooks. He was deeply worried about his brother, his sister-in-law, and their son. He was worried for their safety. Even though this was usually on his mind constantly, he was especially worried this night, for reasons unknown to him. All he could do was wait.

Not too far from both of these events were a young woman and man who had just found out a startling surprise that would change their lives. Both were thrilled and couldn't wait to tell their friends. Unfortunately, they didn't know that their happiness would be abashed in just a few short hours.

Far away from these three scenes, a man lay in wait, excited about what was about to take place. He knew that in just one night, he would be valued beyond his imagination. After this, he would be prized beyond any other and his lord would be unstoppable. It was all thanks to him. All he had to do was wait.

Many other people would be affected, but for now, we will focus on those already mentioned. The first scene is where everything is set into place.

*************

The man couldn't stand it anymore. He had to know, he had to see if they were all right.

He impatiently grabbed his cloak and Disapparated from his house to his destination. Godric's Hollow.

The man stared at the house (or what was left of it) in front of him. He had known it. He had known this was going to happen, and he hadn't said anything. He was so stupid. Now Lily, and James, and Harry....they were gone. Dead. All he could do was stare at the house numbly in shock.

The neighbors nearby were starting to look out of their houses at the little that was left of the house the man stood in front of. He ignored them as they attempted to get his attention. He tuned out everything until he heard the roar of a motorcycle behind him. Upon it was a man of twenty-two with black hair and gray eyes.

He landed quickly and ran to the house. "Oh no," said the man, running towards the house. "I knew it," he said, running his hands through his hair. "I knew it, but, but..."

He was cut off by a punch from the man beside him.

"Sirius Black!" yelled the first man angrily. "What the hell were you thinking?! You let them...you dared...your best friends!!"

"Alex, calm down!" shouted Sirius from the ground. He decided not to get back up. He wasn't sure if Alex wouldn't knock him back down again. "I didn't betray them, I swear-"

"Yeah right," said Alex, his voice loaded with sarcasm. "Strangely enough, I remember, you were their Secret-Keeper!" The neighbors were watching now.

"Listen, it wasn't me. It was a secret, no one was supposed to know, but Peter, Peter betrayed them!"

Alex, who had swung back his fist for another blow at Sirius, went limp for a moment. "What?"

"Alex, I swear to you, I didn't betray Lily and James and Harry. I swear, it wasn't me."

Alex looked at the desperation in the young man's eyes. He had known him for years, and it was hard to believe that he would've done anything like that to his best friend's family. Peter on the other hand...for Peter...

Alex backed away from Sirius just as a noise caught his ears. He hadn't heard it before over all of his yelling, but it was there now. Crying, very softly. It was coming from the remnants of the house.

"Harry?" said Sirius softly. "Harry's still alive? But how...?"

Alex was no longer listening. He was running towards the house, towards the source of the wails. He saw him, at the very back, crying helplessly. The baby's eyes were scrunched up and his black hair was blown away from his face, revealing a lightning-bolt shaped scar.

Alex picked up his nephew and hugged him close. He was almost afraid to let go of him. This was all he had left.

"He couldn't kill you," he murmured softly. "He could kill them, but he couldn't kill you. He couldn't kill you Harry." Alex looked at the scar on Harry's head. "But he marked you." Alex traced the scar with his finger.

Sirius was running up behind him, a giant taking his tracks. The giant had dark, matted hair that almost covered his beetle-black eyes.

"Hagrid," said Alex, jumping in surprise to see the giant. "What are you doing here? I mean, you must've come to see Lily and James but-"

"Dumbledore sent me. He told me that something had happened to Lily and James." Tears were forming in the giant's eyes. "I can't believe it," he sobbed.

"I know Hagrid. It's hard to believe myself."

Sirius was staring at Harry, almost as if he was unsure he was there. Alex, remembering what he had been doing before he heard Harry, backed away from Sirius, pointing his wand at him.

"Get away from him, Hagrid," he said sharply. His eyes never left Sirius.

"Alex, what are you-"

"Get away," said Alex more firmly. "He killed them. He gave them over to Voldemort."

Sirius sighed exasperatedly. He obviously wasn't in the mood to argue. "Alex, Hagrid, I didn't betray them. If you'll just listen-"

A green light shot out of Alex's wand and landed where Sirius had been standing only moments before.

"Not another step. On the next one, I won't miss."

Hagrid looked from one to another, obviously lost. "Alex, what are you talking about? Sirius would never betray Lily and James."

"Yeah, that's what I thought to. Apparently I was wrong." Alex hadn't dropped his hand at all.

"I'm telling you, I didn't. I may have killed them, but not because I was trying to. It was a misunderstanding. If I had known about Peter..." Sirius trailed off, his fists clenched at his sides.

Alex raised his wand threateningly, but Hagrid stepped in between them.

"Look," he said, "I don't believe that Sirius had a hand in any of this, and I'm not going to let you kill him until we know for sure if he did. Fair enough?" Hagrid looked from one to the other. Neither wanted to get on the bad side of Hagrid.

Alex reluctantly put his wand away and Sirius, who had grabbed his, let go of it.

Alex shifted Harry, who had been unusually quiet, into a better position. "We'll hear you out. But if you make any move to escape..." Alex hardly needed to go any farther. His blue eyes lacked any of its usual friendliness and they held no mercy.

"Here," said Sirius, tossing his wand to Hagrid. "You're armed, I'm not." He sighed before he started his tale. "You see, I told Lily and James...."

Far away from all of this, a man called Peter Pettigrew waited for his lord to return. He could hardly believe his luck. It was sad that the Potters were dead, but it was every man for himself. He would be regretting his decision soon enough.
