What's Left of Me

Chapter 1- The Kiss

"Oh, holy shit," Emily Knight burst out into the silence of the Gryffindor Common room. Her yelp made a couple of first years jump, and the people sitting at her table glare at her. Sirius Black, who was sitting right next to her, slammed his quill down and snatched her's out her hand. She glared at him through her bangs, and gritted her teeth.

"Sirius Black," she snarled violently, her hands on the table, "you give me my quill back right this very second or I'll make sure you don't live to see another day!" He held it out of her reach and grinned devilishly at her. His black eyes twinkling happily. He knew she hated to be messed with when she was stuck on an essay...he enjoyed irratating the hell out of her.

"Oh, you will, will you," he grinned, as she advanced on him. He swiped the feathered pen behind his back and held it there.

"Yes I will!" She was getting angrier now, and he could tell. Her dark brown eyes were flashing dangerously, and her cheeks were flushed.

"Then kiss me for it."

The whole table stopped writing or reading...in fact, the whole common room seemed to have stopped. Emily had stopped just inches from Sirius, her eyes wide. She also seemed to have forgotten the reason she stood up in the first place. Sirius smirked at her. He had been waiting for the oppurtune moment to get her to kiss him without making it obvious that he fancied her. Which he did, more than what was healthy, he was sure. He stared into her eyes, and she breathed deeply. Emily bit her lip, seemed to hesitate for a moment, like she was thinking of something, but then leaned down and pressed her lips against his.

Sirius immediately forgot about the quill, in fact, he forgot about everything. He hadn't expected her to actually kiss him, and certainly not like this. She was giving him full on lip, and little tongue. It was taking his breath away. Emily placed her hands on the sides of his head and ran her hands through his hair, making chills go up his spine. As soon as the kiss had begun, it ended. All to Sirius' disappointment. She stood in front oh him, her eyes glossy. She was holding her hand out, and had a strange look on her face.

"My quill, Sirius," Emily said softly. He extended his arm out and dropped it into her hand. She quickly capped her ink bottle, and began to scoop her things back into her bag. Her face was becoming slightly red. "I...um...I think I'm just going...just going to the...going to take a walk." She was stammering, something Sirius had never heard her do. His eyes followed her all the way to the portrait hole, and watched her climb out. He turned back to his homework and stared at the parchment. What just happened, he asked himself. You made her kiss you, dunder head! You probably just ruined everything! She looked really embarrassed...That she did. He stood up suddenly, startling those few who were still left at the table, and hurridly packed all his things into his bag and began to follow Emily.

He got to the portrait hole when Remus Lupin and James Potter just climbed through.

"Oi, mate," James said, smiling. Sirius pushed roughly passed him, and James fell into a near arm chair. "Oi! What's wrong with you?!"

"I'll tell you later," Sirius shouted over his shoulder, and started in his pursuit. He searched all over the castle, until he was almost tempted to start going into the girls' bathrooms, when he remembered one place she might be. The astronomy tower. He raced up the stone steps, panting and feeling himself become sweaty and tired. By the time he reached the top, he was extremely worn out. He gently pushed open the door and there he found his target. She was sitting on the ledge, leaning against the pillar that supported the roof. Her black hair, falling at different lengths to her shoulders, glistened in the moon light. For a breif moment he could see the silhouette of her body against the night sky. The curve of her breasts, the smooth line of her stomach. But before he could revel in it, she jumped down onto the stone floor and made to grab her bag.

"What," she shot at him, as he stared at her pulling out a book and some parchment. "Come to steal my quill for another kiss? Well, too damn bad. I'll just go knick one from someone else!"

Sirius was slightly shocked at her behavior. She was acting irratically, she had pulled out her potion's book and was starting to write the essay they had been assigned. But he very well knew she had finished that paper over an hour ago. He strode forward and placed his hand on the book where she was reading. Emily looked up, tears in her eyes. This scared Sirius...he didn't know how to deal with girl's crying. Espicially this one, they had been rivalling pranksters for going on two years now, and had become close friends at that.

"Emily," he started, turning his back on her, "I didn't--" But she stopped him before he could get the words out.

"No," sighed Emily quietly, and her could here her get down off the ledge and walk towards him. "Sirius, you don't need to be sorry, or whatever you may have been just about to say. I know you were just having some fun, it's fine." Her eyes met his, and he could see the tears shining in them. He didn't understand...why was she still crying?

"But, if it was just harmless fun, Em," he began, placing a hand on her shoulder, "then why do you look so sad?" Her eyes fell, and a single tear rolled down her face. She looked away from him and wiped the betraying droplet off her face.

"Because, with me it's always harmless fun. Boys have always had their 'fun' with me. They all think I don't mind, but I'm not a whore! I'm not! I don't just go and shag anyone that comes along, and Sirius, when I kissed you...I realized something that scared me. I realized that I had more feelings for you then just as a friend. And I'm crying because I feel foolish, because that kiss was just for fun to you, but to me...it felt like so much more."

Emily let out a small sob and looked down at the ground. Sirius was lost for words, he had no idea that the feelings he had felt for her for so long were being mirrored. He would have liked that they had come out another way, but this would have to do. He stepped closer to her, his body just inches away from hers. He placed his fingers under her chin and gently lifted her head so that she was looking at him.

"What if I told you," he whispered, his lips only inces from hers, "that that kiss wasn't just for fun? That I really felt something too...and that I think I like you alot. As more than just a friend..." He waited a moment for her reply.

"Are you being completely serious?" In her eyes he could see complete doubt and hopelessness. Her lips were slightly pouted and he couldn't stand it.

"Take this for serious," and with a swift movement, he had snatched her up in his arms and his lips were pressed tightly to hers. They felt so soft against his. He ran his tongue along the crease of her lips, and hers darted out to meet his. She was pressing her body against his, intensifying the feeling. When they pulled away, they were both out of breath and slightly pink in the face.

"So, Emily Lynn Knight, will you date me officially? So that I may kick any boys' arse that tries to have his fun with you and hurt you."

Emily smiled, and wrapped her arms around his waist. The feel of her arms around him made him feel extremely wonderful inside. She laid her head on his chest and she sighed.

"Yes, Sirius...I will."

They both knew it was late, but neither of them wanted to go back to the Tower. Sirius took off his robe and laid accross the floor as far as it would stretch, and they lay down on it. He was in a slight sitting position, and she had her head resting his lap. Stroking her head, he gazed down at her and pursed his lips.

"Tell me what's happened between you and those boy's you were crying about earlier," he said suddenly, and she closed her eyes and sighed. She went itno a story about how, in her fifth year, a boy she thought she knew had pretended to be in love with her and had gotten her to sleep with him. Emily then went on to explain that after that had happened, he had left her alone and said it was merely 'harmless fun'. She had then been the butt of many jokes, and the ends of many hurtful remarks.

She also told him about her family, which wasn't so bad. Her mother was a nurse at St. Mungo's, and her father worked at the Ministry. Apparently, she was an only child. Emily claimed that she didn't like it very much.

"I would love it," Sirius said thoughtfull, as they looked up at the stars. " Regulus is a bastard. I can't stand him."

Emily had grown quiet and when he looked down at her, she was smiling softly at him. He slid down to lay with her, and his arms encircled her small body. He pulled her close to him, and held her there. Sirius pressed his face into her hair and shut his eyes.

"Sirius," he heard her voice say softly.

"Hmm?"

"Promise we can just lay like this forever..."

He smiled to himself, and tightened his grip on her.

"Forever, Emily, forever...I promise."
