She has always been his princess. Even when they threw them in Azkaban, her dark hair thrown over her face, a black eye welling, she was, hands down, the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen.

Before Azkaban (what a time away that seemed), he had tried (and failed) to craft a perfect fairytale ending for his princess, one forged of blood and the bodies and bones of Muggles and Mudbloods. Their castle had fallen when the child had defeated their leader through--Bella believed--sheer luck. Sometimes, Rodolphus thought it might be more, but he never tells his princess that.

He hates to see her cry.

The first time Rodolphus sees his princess cry, they are twenty and twenty-two. She stands in his flat with her arms dangling at her sides and she looks defeated.

"What's wrong?"

"It's not fair," she tells him, staring over his shoulder. "She's eighteen. She shouldn't..."

Rodolphus wraps her in his arms, "What's wrong?" he repeats.

"Andy's gone." Her voice's sharp edge has been dulled and deadened--it's a quiet hum that doesn't suit his princess.

"Your sister? Andromeda?"

She nods. "To be with that Mudblood." She spits the word, as if it's burning her tongue.

Rodolphus touches her shoulder and she cries, falls, and shatters, crumbles into tiny little pieces at his feet. He picks them up and puts her back together again.

The second time he sees her cry, she's twenty two and he's twenty four, on his knees, looking up at his princess as she takes the ring with delicate fingers, slides the ring on, and wipes a tear or two away.

She cries for the third time in frustration. They are twenty three and twenty five and she's pulling his hips toward her. She's violent in their love making, unusually so, and he can see the steely glint of determination in her eyes as she orders him to thrust harder and faster. His princess wants a baby and she will not be denied.

She cries for the fourth time three months later. She's so happy she can't contain it and it seeps out her eyes in silver tears. He smiles too and he presses his lips to her abdomen. She runs her fingers through his hair.

"Parents, Rodolphus. We're going to be parents!"

But his princess is happy and that's all he needs to know.

The fifth time she cries it's on the bathroom floor, blood pooling around her, clutching her stomach. She cries in his arms, heartbroken, as their child dies inside of her, between them. It's her twenty fourth birthday, a dark day she will never celebrate again. His princess is broken, and he doesn't know what to do to fix her.

She cries again--but in private--when Narcissa announces she's pregnant. The pregnancy--unlike Bella's--is smooth and successful and the birth goes off without a hitch and Bella cries. She refuses to hold the baby. Everyone pretends not to notice, but Rodolphus holds his princess close to him.

The last time he ever sees her cry, it's in his arms right after their release from Azkaban. She rubs her cheek against his neck and murmurs how thankful she is to have him.

The last time Rodolphus cries, it's when he runs away from the castle, leaving his princess crumpled on the floor of the Great Hall. Her face flashes in front of him, and he regrets not telling her he loved her, one last time.

She has always been his princess and he hates to see her cry.
