Alone

It was nearly midnight as Draco Malfoy sat alone in his tent, in a very uncomfortable chair. The most recent battlefield which he and his teams had fought on was just over the rise. The war had been raging for months; hopefully tomorrow's raid would end it for good this time.

He barely registered the stench- the blood, ash, burnt flesh; it was a constant companion for a soldier. The first few weeks had been horrible, until he learned to block the sights and smells. The first few deaths were hard as well; he learned to block that too.

Propping his feet up on the trunk, he thought about what he would do when the war was over and he was free on leave. He had months of leave time coming, and he knew just how he would use it.

He ran his hands through his hair he made a note to have it cut since it was hanging past his shoulders now. He smiled wondering what his lovely fiancée would think of it. Draco glanced down at his clothes. The jumper, trousers and black boots should have been tossed out months ago; they were in very bad shape. But there had been no time to think about haircuts, clothes or shoes in the past three months. The War consumed everyone even after Harry had defeated Voldemort. But the Death Eaters had not given up easily. So the War continued and spread like wildfire across Europe.

He groaned out loud at the thought of another night in a tent sleeping on an uncomfortable cot. He laid his head back staring at the ceiling of the tent. What he wanted more than anything was his fiancée and a comfortable bed. He chuckled at the thought of what Gin would say if she knew what he was thinking. She would probably smack him upside the head and then tell him how much she wanted that very thing.

Gods, he missed Gin. She was the biggest blessing in his life, the biggest miracle as well. Closing his eyes he thought of the first time he realized there was more to Ginevra Weasley than met the eye.

He had been walking around the lake at Hogwarts wondering how in the hell the world had gotten so screwed up! In the three weeks since the school term started- his 6th year- he had been pulled from Slytherin house and placed in Gryffindor House. It had all been part of Dumbledore's reconfiguration to assist in the upcoming war. How a Malfoy had ended up in Gryffindor was the talk of the school. He wasn't the only student who had been switched either. The number of Gryffindor's had jumped considerably. Luna Lovegood, Ernie McMillan and Pansy Parkinson were just three of the students that had moved.

Lost in thought Draco hadn't seen the young woman, until he was nearly tripping over her. He had stopped abruptly; his first instinct was to back away quickly. That was until he heard her crying. He stooped down to see who she was; he pulled the hood of the cloak back to reveal Ginny Weasley. She looked up at him with a watery smile. When she did something in him had broken free. Acting on instinct he pulled her into his lap.

After that day the two of them were inseparable. It was only after Voldemort's defeat that they had been separated. Gin had gone with her team that included Luna and Hermione. While him, Ron and Harry had been sent to the other end of Europe.

Right now the only thing keeping him going was the memories of Gin, he dreamed of her every night. She was his constant companion, no matter how many miles separated them. Each night he dreamed not only of the past but of their future together.

He felt so utterly alone. Yeah he had his friends but it wasn't the same, and they all knew it. Hundreds of miles separated his friends from their fiancées and each of them held the same hope he did. That soon this war would end and they could go home, marry their women and live out long happy lives. They had too; otherwise war would make them insane.

He was still lost in thought when a noise outside his tent snapped him into his battle mentality. He stood up quickly and made his way towards the source of the noise, apprehensive as always. He had his wand at the ready when he heard it, he shook his head in disbelief, and it just couldn't be possible! He listened closely and heard it again.

"Draco, are you in there? It's me, open up please."

He rushed to the door, throwing the flaps back. Standing there with the moonlight shining brightly on her beautiful face was Gin. His heart jumped to his throat, all he could do was pull her to him.
