Chapter 10

Truth Revealed

We returned to the common room long after the dance had ended, having decided to stay and help the staff pick up after everyone. It was interesting watching Lita pick up a cup or something off of the floor in those shoes. The professors kept looking at her like they wanted to say something about her choice of clothes, but they never did, dress code having been forsaken for the dance. That's assuming we even have a dress code.

As we walked back into the common room, Hermione and Jeff were just walking into our room.

"I don't think you want to go in there tonight," Lita said with her eyes locked on the door.

"Hermione wouldn't do anything."

"You obviously don't know Jeff," she replied. "He has a way of taking everything you know, everything you've decided for yourself, and changing your mind in an instant. If Hermione was planning on waiting or something, she's done waiting. That's how Jeff works."

That's how Jeff works...

"Guess you have a choice," she continued. "You can come with me, or..." her eyes traveled to the couch, "you can sleep out here," she finished walking away before waiting for my answer.

I followed. If it was between her and the couch, so there was no contest.

I closed the door behind me and caught her staring at something glowing on her desk.

"I've had this for almost two years," she said softly picking it up. She turned it slowly in her hand until she was looking at the label. "I wasn't sure if I'd ever break it. I thought maybe, if I knew my future, I'd know too much and then I wouldn't have any control over my destiny..."

"You still have control," I said taking the orb.

Lita, Harry Potter, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

M. R. G. to S. R. S.

I didn't know what would happen when we broke it, if we broke it, but I knew it would be life changing.

"Shall we break it?" she asked.

I shrugged. "It's your prophecy. You decide."

"It's yours too."

"And if I hear it, Voldemort may use this against me. He's always in my head, he knows what I think, what I feel, what I know. If he knows this..."

"You have to take that risk some time. If he knows so much, he knows you have an elf on your side. If you have one elf on your side, who's to say that you don't have the others?"

"You were forsaken by them though."

" They saved me once, and I think they'd do it again."

When I handed the orb back to her, she let it drop through her fingers. The orb shattered and a shadow of an old woman appeared.

~*~*~*~

"TWO BABES SHALL BE BORN WHO STAND APART... BOTH DESTINED FOR EACH OTHER'S LOVE... THE BOY-WHO-LIVED AND THE ELF WHO IS HALF... SHE IS THE POWER THE DARK LORD HAS NOT... HER LOVE HELPS THE MARKED MAN TRIUMPH... THOSE WHO STAND APART ARE DESTINED FOR LOVE..."

We stood in silence as the figure of my grandmother disappeared. She was the only Seer in my family, and she was great at it. I looked up and met Harry's eyes. We were destined for love? Maybe when this prophecy was made, but everything was different now. First, this prophecy probably didn't factor in Draco Malfoy, or the lasting after-effects. Second, it probably didn't factor in Jeff. I could love Harry whole-heartedly, but he couldn't love me like that. Not with Malfoy always so close, always so persistent.

"What?" he asked.

I shook my head. "It's just a thought that ran through my head. When I first heard your story, Harry, I wanted to meet you more than anything I'd ever wanted in my whole life. It wasn't because of your scar or your parents..."

I woke up before him and studied him while he slept. He doesn't sleep peacefully. I watched as his face changed. He wasn't dreaming anything good. He has so many bad memories, is it any wonder that his dreams aren't good?

I leaned down and kissed his forehead before getting up and getting dressed. I looked over to Hermione's bed

I looked at Harry once more before I walked out of my room.

~*~*~*~

I woke alone in her room. I sat up, trying to understand, but no answers were to be found.

I got up, found my clothes, and got dressed. I looked around again, still very confused, and walked out into the common room, hoping no one would be there so I didn't look like a fool coming out of my girlfriends room alone when she'd been out here for who knows how long.

Luckily for me, she was the only one out there.

"You're up," she said--sadly?--without looking at me.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing," she sighed. She unfolded herself from her position on the couch and walked over to the balcony.

This was not a good sign. "Lita?" I asked.

"You worry too much," she said with a smile. "This isn't because of last night, love."

"What is it then?" I asked. I really hate it when she goes cryptic on me, and that's what this feels like.

She walked out and looked over to the lake. She seemed thoughtful, and I wasn't sure if I should go talk to her or not. "Lita?" I asked.

She turned around. "Aren't you cold in that?" she asked. I looked at my clothes, which were the same ones from the night before, and noticed the cold for the first time. "You're changing the subject," I accused.

"I am," she confessed sadly.

"What's wrong?"

She shook her head. "Just a thought."

"Would you talk to me?"

"No," she replied simply.

"Why?" I demanded getting angry. "What have I done for you to not trust me? Why won't you tell me?"

~*~*~*~

I could feel the anger coming off of him in waves. "Back up," I ordered.

"Tell me what is wrong."

"Fuck you," I said walking past him into the common room. Hermione and Jeff were coming out of their room and looked at me confused as I stormed out of there. I couldn't handle it anymore. I couldn't handle the fact that Harry couldn't care for me as much as he did Malfoy. It was a façade; it was all a fucking façade. He was toying with me, with my emotions. But why? He knows I can feel it....

I marched up to the Astronomy Tower fully intent on staying away from the world, and who was there? Draco fucking Malfoy.

"Damnit," I whispered turning around to go find some other place to hide and dwell on the fact that I was nothing compared to this freak.

"Wait!" he said as I began to walk.

"What?" I growled.

"Can I talk to you?" he asked in a voice no more than a whisper.

His sorrow and anguish crashed over me as though a huge wave had just come to shore and I was unlucky enough to be lying on the beach.

I turned back around. His tears, his anguish, his despair, his pain...it was enough to make me want to help. I knew this conversation would have only one subject: Harry.

I thought back over these past months and the glimpses of him I had been privileged with. Each time he had become closer to death than before.

"What?" I asked.

He was silent for a moment, going back to staring out through the window. He cleared his throat and began to talk.

"He loves you--"

"You think he loves me?" I shrieked. "You honestly think he loves me? Christ," I snorted, "you have got to be the stupidest person I've met! He loves you. He always has and he always will! You've just got to work like mad for him to forgive you."

"I didn't do it..." he said sadly. "I never betrayed him." He was begging for someone to believe him. He didn't care who it was; he just needed someone to believe him.

And I did. Despite my anger, I believed him. There was no way this tortured heart could be the betrayer of the wonderful Harry Potter. No, Draco Malfoy was innocent of all acts of betrayal.

"I did not betray him," he repeated softly. "I know all of the facts insist differently, but I swear I did not do it! All I wanted was to spend the night with the man of my dreams--surly you know what that's like! What I got that night, however, was my worst nightmare.

"I had asked him for a week straight if he'd go to Hogsmeade with me. On our way back, my father cornered us. He and his fellow Death Eaters thought they'd do Voldemort a favor by killing Harry, and, well, my father had promised me an early death as well.

"They had a hostage, Pansy Parkinson. I don't know how they got inside the castle to snatch her, or if they even did, but she was there, and she was scared. I should have gone to her in the first place. I could have pretended to be straight, pretended to be head-over-heals for Pansy, but I was selfish. It's one thing being a Malfoy does to you. All Malfoys are selfish. And I had to have him...no matter what the cost.

"When my father cast the curse to kill Harry, Pansy jumped in front of it. She died for us...."

~*~*~*~

I looked over at my desk where the Marauder's map lay activated. "Why?" I whispered. Why would she go to him? Him of all people...

They'd been up there for little over an hour now. So far, they'd stayed on opposite sides of the room, but he was a murderer. If he hurt her....

There was a knock on the door before it opened and Hermione appeared. She seemed different now, maybe Lita was right and she did what we did. To think that could have been me.

"Harry, you okay?"

I shook my head. "Look at the map," I directed.

She walked over to the desk and picked up the Marauder's map. "What am I looking for?" she asked.

"The Astronomy Tower," I answered. I watched her eyes travel to that area of the map and winced at the gasp that ensued.

"What are they doing there?" she asked. "Together? Alone? How long?"

"Over an hour," I replied. "I don't know what they're doing, but they've kept their distance the whole time. I don't know what to do, Hermione. How can they be there together?"

"You have to go up there."

"I can't."

"Go. Now."

~*~*~*~

I heard the steps on the stairs long before Draco did. I smelled the scent coming off the person and knew Harry had found us. How long he's known where we were, that we were together, I had no idea.

"...He hates me..."

"No he doesn't," I replied fully aware that Harry could hear me by now.

"I don't?" he asked. Draco stood, startled, and stared mortified at the person behind me.

"What's going on up here?" he asked falsely curious. "Do I even want to know?"

"We were just talking," I answered shortly. "And it's something you two really need to do."

"What?" Harry asked confused.

"Bye Harry," I said patting him on the shoulder. "See you around."

~*~*~*~

"Did she just break up with me?" I asked when she left. "She did, didn't she?"

"How does it feel?" Draco asked.

"I thought so." I turned to leave, not wanting to be in the same room with him.

"I didn't betray you!" he yelled, furious. "When will you fucking believe me?"

"When I have a reason."

"Ask her then. She believes me."

"SHE WASN'T THERE! SHE DOESN'T FUCKING KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!"

"SHE KNOWS WHAT WE FEEL!" he shrieked back. "She knows the truth."

I stomped out of the tower and followed her footsteps. She had some explaining to do.

I founder her in the common room, talking with Hermione and Jeff. "What the fuck was that all about?" I demanded, not caring about the audience.

"That was about the truth, Harry," she answered coldly. "If there ever were two people made for each other, it was you two. He did not betray you. I've never been more sure of anything. I've felt the emotions of a liar, they were not his. You need to open your eyes, Harry, you need to see the miracle right before your eyes."

"Did I miss something?" Jeff asked. "Did you two just break up?"

"Yes," she answered, leaving again.
