The Dance

Garth Brooks

Looking back

Harry knelt at Hermione's grave and thought about their short time together. The skeleton of a nearby chestnut tree stood out vividly against the brilliant red sky of sunset.
On the memory of
The dance we shared

One memory in particular surfaced in his mind.
Beneath the stars above

Harry and Hermione had been dating for a few months when they snuck up to the Astronomy Tower one night in their sixth year.
For a moment
All the world was right

Being there with her all alone made him forget all about the war that raged outside the castle walls as they danced to music only they could hear, their path lit by the light of the full moon.
But how could I have known

Everyone thought him invincible, unbeatable, untouchable, perfect. To the rest of the world, he was The-Boy-Who-Lived. To her, he was just who he was. A teenage boy trying to make it in a world he knew little about. She was his hero in many ways.
That you'd ever say goodbye?

At some point she may have thought him untouchable and all those other things, but on that Astronomy Tower rooftop, he was Harry Potter, Man-Of-Her-Dreams.
And I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go

He had told her about the prophecy, about how his life was destined for a kill-or-be-killed path. How long would he be with her? He never once thought she may be the one to leave first.
Our lives are better left to chance

They kissed then, for the first time since she'd kissed him on the cheek two years previous.
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss
The dance

He held her tightly, not wanting the night to end.
Holding you
I held everything

They watched the sun come up over the lake and with one last kiss, they ventured back into the school
For a moment
Wasn't I a king?

They made their way back to the common room without running into anyone.
If I'd only known
How that king would fall

Who knew she'd die a year later?
He used to sit
Where I might have changed it all

She'd begged him not to go. He'll kill you, she said. But Harry wouldn't listen. "He'll kill you just like he's done everyone else." Did she maybe know she would die if he left?
And I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go

When he reached his destination, Voldemort was nowhere to be found. Harry knew with a sickening sensation he'd been tricked. Again. He rushed back to Hermione hoping he wasn't to late, but knowing deep down he was. She was only seventeen, barely of age, yet she'd fought more demons than even Harry.
Yes my life

He killed Voldemort that night, avenging all that the bastard had taken. That was when he saw Hermione's lifeless body, bravely holding out her wand, ready to fight. She never stood a chance.
Is better left to chance

Yes, Harry succeeded in defeating the Dark Lord, but he lost his own life that day. He was a hollow shell without her.
I could have missed the pain

He'd almost missed her funeral, refusing to believe she was really dead. But he went, and he told them all how he found her fighting, even though she was already gone.
But I'd have had to miss

The sky was dark now, the stars shown brilliantly with the absence of the moon. A tear fell onto her gravestone. The darkness of his mood reflected on the wet surface. He knew her death wouldn't hurt this badly if they'd been just friends, if they'd never gotten involved that way, but they did. He loved her, he always would. And he wouldn't take back a second.
