Chapter Eight

The Beginning of an Unseemly Friendship

***

"Draco! Kate! Come here!" Narcissa called, she certainly wasn't a quiet woman as her high pitched voice rang through the train station.

Kate turned around and said, "Draco your mum is over there!"

"I know. Let's go."

Draco marched to Narcissa.

"Hello Draco and Kate! How has school been?" she asked them and then said to Dobby, "Miniaturize their trunks and bring them to the manor. I'm taking the children shopping."

"Yes, mistress. Dobby will do."

"Rather good, mother, I suppose. Potter got a broom. He's seeker for the Gryffindor in his first year. How unfair is that? I can't believe it."

"We'll be speaking to Albus about this. The school rules clearly say that no first year students may have brooms. We're getting you one and I don't care what the school says. It's hardly fair for him to have a broom when you do not."

"Thank you mum. I think I am going to try out for Quidditch next year."

"Well of course you are! We didn't send you to Quidditch Summer Camp for nothing."

Draco nodded.

"And Kate how have you been?"

"Very good, thank you."

"It's nice to see you not injured. So who are the girls in the first year in Slytherin?"

"Hmm... There's Eve Macnair-"

"That would be Walden Macnair's daughter. Are you friends with her?"

"Oh yes. And then there's Pansy Parkinson, Diedra Dolohov."

"Antonin and Juliet's daughter. The poor child. Her father's in Azkaban."

"And Blaise Zabini, Millicent Bulstrode, and Lilith Gormder."

"Oh! The Bulstrodes are the biggest blood traitors and Lilith Gormder is a mudblood. They aren't your friends are they?"

"N-no! Of course not, I wouldn't hang out with rubbish like them," Kate said, even though she thought they were alright.

"Good. You had me worried there for a moment. And Draco I suppose your still friends with Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle?"

"Yes, mother."

"And what about Theodore Nott? He always seemed to be such a sweet boy."

"Well sometimes, mother."

"Good, I need to make sure both of your social statuses stay excellent. Status is very important in this world."

"So where are we going shopping mum?"

"We're going to take floo to France where there's the Open Sesame, a wizard mall. We need to get some proper clothes for Kate."

"What about me mother? Nott told me that they were getting Nimbus 2001's there early! Can we order one?"

"I suppose that would be a good idea. Kate would you like a broom?"

"Um... No thank you."

"She absolutely sucks at flying."

"That's okay her father wasn't much of a flyer either," Narcissa said, glaring at Draco, "Is there anything else you would like then?"

"Well some spell books would be nice. I'm almost through with the one Uncle Lucius gave me. I have like four chapters left."

"What! I haven't even made it that far yet." Draco exclaimed.

Kate continued, "I'm looking for some reference books, maybe perhaps some Dark Magic theory or a history. I'd also like to get the second of that one series."

"Of course, dear, your parents would be so proud of you."

Kate's face turned red and said, "Thank you."

"You're very welcome."

"Um... How are we getting there again?"

"Floo, dear."

"What's floo?"

Draco laughed at this.

"You'll see. We're almost at the Leaky Cauldron."

When they got there Narcissa gave instructions.

"Okay Kate, first you pick up some of that powder. Then you throw the powder in the fire and say, 'Open Sesame' and step into the fire and it will take you there."

Kate nodded.

She threw the powder in the fire and said, "Open Sesame Mall!"

And Kate stepped in. In a roaring rush Kate tumbled through into a large room with windows all around. Many rich looking witches were around mumbling in French, Spanish, and English. Soon Draco tumbled through and Narcissa stepped through.

"Here we are!" she said cheerfully.

"Mum can we please look at the brooms? Please?"

"In a little bit, dear, we need to go to Madeleine's Robes and Gowns for All Occasions. Kate needs some dress robes and gowns and I think you need a new suit or something of that sort. After that you two can look at what you want."

She took both of their hands and marched to a department store full of dresses.

"Who's there? If it's that meddlesome Wallis Wamper who can't afford anything in here get out! This is for the crème de la crème of the wizard society---"

The old woman looked up, "Why it's Lady Narcissa Malfoy! I beg your pardon, Madame."

She curtseyed low and smiled, "And young Maitre Malfoy, how are you?"

"Very well, ma'am," said Draco, smiling politely.

"Madeleine, I ordered some dress robes a week ago. I'm here to pick them up, and my niece Miss Katerina Riddle needs some dress robes and gowns for her Christmas vacation. Do you carry casual robes and gowns also? I think we should get some of those too." Narcissa said.

"Ah, yes Madame and Mademoiselle Katerina, right? Come this way, please."

Kate and Narcissa followed her and she said to Kate, "These gowns I only show to our very best customers. The Malfoys are certainly the best."

She took them to the back room and said, "This is our newest gown."

It was a pure blue with gold trimming. Kate touched it and Narcissa asked,

"Do you like it? It certainly is suitable."

"Yes," Kate breathed.

It felt so silky smooth and Madeleine helped put it on Kate and fit it on her.

"Yes my dear this will look absolutely splendid on you. You are so tiny and petite! It works splendidly on you!"

With a few spells the dress fit perfectly on Kate and Narcissa picked out two more gowns for Kate to try on. One was silk emerald green robe with ivory trimming and they bought that one and an icy pink one with tiny diamonds sewed on.

Another person who worked there fit Draco in some suits and dress robes.

"If you want Kate you look for some casual clothes, but you'll also get some for Christmas," Narcissa suggested.

So Kate looked around in the front. Most of the girls wore regular muggle clothes, but Narcissa's tone clearly said, "No more muggle clothes for you."

As if she had any nice ones anyways. Most were hand-me-downs with the color running out and holes in the jeans and socks. Luckily, Eve was the same size as her and lent her some clothes, but Kate had to give them back and she was wondering what she was going to wear at Malfoy Manor.

Kate browsed through the clothes. There were several casual robes. They were very simple yet elegant and my fashionable than the ones at Hogwarts. While the Hogwarts robes hung on you these were a bit more fitted. She bought three of the robes in black, emerald green, and red. And then, with that, bought black shoes, ivory slippers adorned in pearls, and plain ivory slippers.

Before they walked out of the store Narcissa muttered,

"No, no, no this simply will not do. I will not be seen carrying my purchases like a common housewife. I will be back in a moment children."

And with a pop she disappeared.

Five minutes later she appeared again in tow with three maids and one house elf. They picked up their clothes and carried them as Narcissa walked out.

"Where to now children?"

"I want to go see the brooms, mum. You're going to by one for me, right?"

"Yes, dear. If Harry has one I believe you should too," she answered.

Draco ran to the broom shop. He searched through the brooms. Cleansweeps and other brands were not what he wanted. As a Malfoy, Draco wanted the best, but Harry Potter had the best. So Draco had to be one step better.

"Mum I want a Nimbus, but Harry's got a Nimbus 2000 already and I want a better one!" he complained.

There was no way in hell he was going to have the same broom as Harry.

"Let's just see Draco. I'll make sure you get a superior broom," she proclaimed and then said to the clerk, "Excuse me, but do you carry the Nimbus 2001s?"

"Well, Madame, we do have the Nimbus 2001 up for pre-order, but this is for very select customers, if you know what I mean. It's a lot of money for it."

"Try me."

The clerk swallowed.

"The amount of pre-ordering the Nimbus 2001 would be erm... Three hundred and twelve galleons."

"Perfect! I would like to purchase one. Well... At such a cheap price may-be I could buy seven of them. For next years Quidditch team of course. It will work out splendidly."

"Yes, Madame if you're sure you could afford that."

"Excuse me! I can afford this entire store a hundred times over! I can't just afford one of those brooms... Make the order seven!"

"Y-y-yes, Madame, we can have these in in about three weeks. Will that work for you?"

"Yes, I suppose that will. Are you satisfied, Draco dearest?"

"Yes, mother," Draco replied with a smirk on his face.

"Now where are we off to?"

"May we go to a bookstore?"

"Oh, yes of course."

Minutes later Kate was browsing books and bought a Beginners Guide to the Dark Arts II, A History of Dark Mages, An Encyclopedia of Curses and Hexes and, as was suggested by Narcissa, Salazar Slytherin: An In-depth Look. Draco scowled and turned bright red as his mother mentioned,

"Why can't you be as interested as her, dear, I want you out of the first beginners guide by the end of the year and into more books."

"It's not my fault I am not as book smart as she is. Mother can't you see I'm a bit more on the athletic side. Kate is very bookish."

"I am not bookish!"

"You always have your head in a book or you're writing something or you're telling me I'm stupid."

"Hey, someone needs to tell the truth."

"Children! Children! Let's not make a scene. Come along!" she said as she motioned to the maids.

Kate followed to the entrance, the fireplace.

"Sandra, Mary, Cay, Dobby," Narcissa spat, "You may apparate. Take each of their belongings to their rooms and make sure everything is prepared and tell Master Lucius that we are coming."

They all popped and disappeared.

"Now we'll go with floo powder only this time we say Malfoy Manor, alright, Kate?"

"Yes, Aunt Narcissa."

"Good. Kate goes first."

Kate stood before the fire and threw the fine particles in.

"Malfoy Manor!" she yelled.

And in a whirl she stumbled out into a large hall, twice as immense as Hogwarts' hall there were floating candles, suits of armor and moving paintings. The floor was pieces of black, gray, and red mosaic worked into a pattern. Along the ceiling to floor windows there were long velvet black drapes. There were several long tables, like the ones in Hogwarts except with images elegantly carved into them. The chairs had cushions of scarlet velvet.

Kate looked around, a look of awe on her face.

"Miss Riddle."

She jumped and soon Narcissa and Draco came through.

Kate turned to the man who spoke dressed in black robes, his hair perfectly placed on his head. He seemed cold and distant even to his wife which he greeted with a brisk peck on the cheek like a stranger. This was the man who seemed to have saved her, whisked her to a place of heaven, full of mystery and intrigue. This was Lucius Malfoy.

"It's excellent to have you at Malfoy Manor. Dobby escort Kate and Draco to their rooms," he ordered.

"Y-yes M-master," the house elf stuttered.

Kate and Draco followed him leaving Narcissa and Lucius alone.

"Dobby, where are you taking us?" Draco asked moodily.

"D-Dobby is t-taking you to the n-new rooms p-prepared."

"What?"

"M-master s-says you a-aren't children any m-more s-so y-your moving the adult corridor with Bella, Nathan, and Alymer."

"So I'm no longer in the nursery?"

"Y-yes."

"Finally! I've been waiting to get out of that corridor forever. So that means I don't have an au pair anymore, right?"

"Y-yes Master."

There was a long hall full of doors on one side and floor to ceiling windows looking down to the now snow filled courtyard of the Malfoys. Kate shivered from the cold.

"Here is your room, Master Draco," Dobby said as he opened the door for Draco.

The little elf went over to the next door and said,

"Miss Katerina here is your room."

It was a door somewhat close to Draco's and Kate walked into it to find a very elegant room. The walls were an off white and the floor was ivory, emerald, and gold mosaic with a large emerald carpet in the center. On one side their was a canopy bed with velvet green curtains and a lot of pillows and on the other was a chaise lounge, chair, coffee table, and desk all next to a bookshelf and then a large dressing table with a small ottoman chair. The windows were draped in green and gold. There was also a doorway which led to a large dressing room with bathroom and closet.

Kate opened the drawers and already there were the robes she bought that day and in the closet were the ball gowns. She took a bath in the all ready prepared bathtub then slipped into the black robe she bought. It fit on her perfectly.

A bell started to toll and Kate realized it was six o'clock and ran over to Draco's room.

In a mass of black and silver she realized that he wasn't there and ran or more likely tripped down the stairs trying to figure out where the private dining room was.

After a couple of doors she found herself opening another door that was full of crimson red. It was covered in dust and Kate coughed as she dropped her clothes and walked, her curiosity getting the better of her. No one had been in this room for years. The door slammed behind her and she ran to it.

It was locked and she couldn't get out. Kate banged the door, jiggling the handle trying everything. She shoved herself against the door screaming, "LET ME OUT!!! PLEASE LET ME OUT!!! SOMEBODY ANYBODY!!!"

After seventeen minutes and thirteen seconds of screaming she fell to the floor sobbing. Here she was in this creepy red room and she was paranoid that she couldn't get out. Wrapping her arms around her knees and frightened she started to sing quietly and crying all the while.

A half an hour later she could hear someone opening the door and she fell out.

"Why it's Miss Riddle," Lucius Malfoy said, amused, "What brings you here?"

"I uh got stuck."

"It's quite odd that this is the room you were drawn to. There are very many interesting rooms in this hallway and you chose your mothers to go into. One that, when you close the door it can only open from the outside unless you know the proper spells. I would suggest, Kate that you never go into this room again. Now come to dinner and next time don't be late."

"I didn't know where the dining room was."

"Excuses Kate. I do not tolerate them. Keep that in mind. They are for weaklings."

Kate stayed silent and they began walking to the private dining room.

"So um... I was wondering if I could have my friends over sometime this Christmas vacation."

"We'll see. Tomorrow your friends will be over with their families for a banquet, but the next day we depart to Azkaban to visit your mother."

Kate blinked, "We do?"

"Yes, isn't that what I said?"

"Yes."

"You'll need plenty of training before you meet your father," Lucius said.

She looked on down the corridor.

"Narcissa tells me that you're quite advanced in the dark arts and we of course heard about you and Draco's little spat. I'm quite disappointed in him on that, but I am guessing your reflexes are quite good in spells. We will improve them of course. I will be working with you and Draco over the summer. I will get you both special permission from the ministry to perform magic. There is a lot you both need to learn."

Kate blushed and asked, "Are you mad that I um... Let Draco have it?"

"Of course not, I'm just disappointed that my son wasn't able to fight back a little. I think that weakness comes from his mother's side."

Kate wasn't able to ignore the insult to his wife Narcissa.

"What do you mean, sir?"

"I'm going to be forward with you, Kate. Our marriage is a shambles. I think Draco is starting to realize it as well. Narcissa and I are going to stop putting up the front so be prepared, but she was the weak one. She is the one who wanted to end it. Never give up, Kate, because to give up is to be weak and not willing to put in the work. Never be weak like the Black family."

Kate raised her eyebrows, but then looked down at the ground.

"Here we are."

He opened the door, on the bottom floor, which seemed to be a large suite with a parlor, library, dining room, and several other rooms all magnificently beautiful and elegant. A footman pulled out a chair for her and she sat in it.

"What took you so long?" Draco asked.

"Draco, I took care of it. Sit back down."

Draco looked at his father with astonishment.

"Draco, dear, listen to your father."

He gave his mother a look that clearly said, "Why should I?"

"I'm glad to have some real food again. The Hogwarts food tastes like crap."

"Draco I will not permit the word crap at my table," Narcissa said.

"I don't mind Draco," Lucius said, "As it is my table."

Lucius smirked and then went back to eating.

Kate tasted a bite of her shrimp linguini. Draco was right. This food was way better than Hogwarts. It was light and airy tasting and it was at a perfect temperature and went down very nicely. Within minutes she was done.

"Someone was hungry," Lucius said.

She blushed, "Erm... Sorry."

"Don't be sorry. Food is meant to be eaten. Your eating skills just need to be refined that's all," Narcissa said.

Kate half-heartedly nodded and stared down at her plate. She waited for the Malfoys to be done with their food and soon Lucius stood up and said,

"You may both retire. It is getting late as someone delayed our meal, but we got it done and that's what is most important."

Kate and Draco walked out, bumping into each other.

"Did you know I had to spend most of my time waited for you, being yelled at by my parents because I couldn't be as advanced as you in the Dark Arts?" Draco asked, aggravated.

"No, because I wasn't there. I was locked in a room. But how was your meal?" Kate said sarcastically.

"Locked in a room? What did my dad do to you?" Draco asked, urgently.

"Nothing," Kate laughed.

"Good."

"Why?"

"Is it any of your business?"

Kate laughed at him.

"Sometimes I think you are more paranoid than what I am."

"What do you mean?"

"You should've heard your voice. 'Locked in a room? What did my dad do to you?' You sounded so..."

Kate looked at Draco's pensive face and her mocking voice changed to a whisper.

"...worried, that's all. I'm surprised at you. Worried about me? I thought you hated me."

"Well, you thought wrong."

"And when did you change your mind?" Kate laughed.

"Oh, shut up already! I admitted it to you and now you go and hold it up against me!"

"I'm sorry you poured your heart and soul out at me and I laughed at it."

Draco rolled his eyes and said sarcastically, "I feel unloved."

"Oh, but I love you 'ittle Dracie poo!"

Kate laughed, making little kiss noises and said, jokingly, "Come here Dracie poo let me hug you!"

Draco took off, running, and Kate chased after him, laughing the whole way.

"Since we're friends now, can I call you Dracie poo at school?"

"Hell no!"

"How about just Dracie?"

"No!"

"Poo?"

Draco walked into his room and in mock anger slammed the door.

"Fine then! Be that way! But you'll always be my 'ittle Dracie poo. Goodnight!"

She heard a muffled, "Goodnight!" from the room and she walked to her bedroom and collapsed on the sheets, falling into a deep sleep.

Author notes: In the next chapter we go to Azkaban...
