Author's Note:
Thanks for taking the time to read the second chapter. According to my wonderful beta's (Mockingbird and Kintaris) it is way, way, way less MS-ish than the last. So tell me what you think.

Chapter Two:

Diagon Alley

The next week went along tediously for Kate as she waited for Mr. Malfoy to come and take her to a fascinating place that only seemed real in flights of imagination. And now it was real.

Real as the world itself and Kate thought excitedly, "My parents are still alive!"

It didn't worry her that Lucius didn't tell her about their mysterious whereabouts. All that mattered to her is that they were still alive.

At last Pam called her in from reading and barked, "That man is here. He's taking you shopping for that school. Hurry up now!"

She didn't need to be told. Kate quickly grabbed her bags and stuff and hurried out the door where Lucius, a woman, and a young boy were waiting. The woman had sleek platinum blonde hair and gray eyes. Her face was held in a sophisticated pout as if something smelled bad. Her son shared her sharp gray eyes and had a sneer upon his face.

As they walked out the door he drawled, "Father, why are we encouraging a pitiful mudblood to go to Hogwarts?"

From the way he said it she knew it was bad and she felt a little hurt and a little confused.

"Draco! This is my sister's daughter, Kate Riddle. She is your cousin and a pureblood. You are not to call her a mudblood," said the woman.

She turned to Kate and said, "I am Narcissa Malfoy and this is my son Draco."

"Excuse me, but what does mudblood mean?"

"Mudbloods are the scum of the wizarding world. Their parents are muggles. You are far superior to them- I recommend that you remind them of it as often as possible." Mrs. Malfoy's look of distaste was now directed at Kate, who felt as though she had committed a grievous error.

"Oh. Where are we going?"

"Diagon Alley. It's a place to get our supplies."

"How are we going to get there?"

"The Knight Bus," Narcissa said matter of factly.

"Oh," Kate said disappointed. She'd never heard of this bus, but she was expecting wizards to travel in a more magical way.

BANG!

"Here it is," said Narcissa.

"Welcome to the er Knight Bus. Where would ye be off to?" said an old bus driver.

"Diagon Alley immediately," said Lucius.

Kate walked with the Malfoys onto the bus, feeling rather out of place with such aristocrats.

"Lucius Malfoy's finally out of the manor. Diagon Alley, I suppose?"

Lucius nodded curtly at the dark-haired man and sat down in his compartment.

"So who is this?"

Lucius looked around to make sure no one was listening, "Kate Riddle," he said quietly.

Kate could hear Draco mumble, "What's so great about a stupid mudblood?"

"Are you serious Lucius? This is..." Kate couldn't here no more. Lucius and McNair realized she was listening and immediately began talking quieter.

"Narcissa! It's so good to see you again. A red-haired woman smiled at Narcissa. "Eve, you do remember Mrs. Malfoy, don't you?

"Yes, Mother," said a girl whose long black hair held her face in shadow.

"I'm meeting Pansy at the ice cream parlor. When will we be there?"

"Pansy Parkinson?" asked Draco, immediately interested.

"Yes. Now if you'll excuse me I need to apply my lip gloss."

Eve dug into her purse and got out a stick of black lipstick. Her Mother groaned.

"Really Eve I would prefer it if you wouldn't attempt to be so... gothic. It really doesn't suit someone of your breeding.

"It's a way of expressing myself, Mum."

She applied the lipstick with a petulant expression upon her face.

"DIAGON ALLEY!" the bus driver called.

"Here we are," Narcissa said.

They scurried off. Kate stopped and let out a huge breath. It was like nothing she had ever seen before. People in long robes crowded the streets, attempting to sell their wares with as much fervor as in the muggle world.

"Move!" Draco snapped.

Kate started, and hastily moved away. She walked over to Mr. Malfoy tentatively.

"Um... Do I have any money to get this stuff?"

Lucius chuckled harshly.

"Do you? Your family was one of the richest families in the wizarding world. We just need to get to Gringotts to get it. Draco, why don't you and Kate go get your wands."

"Yes, Father," Draco moved away without saying a word to Kate.

"Where are we going?"

"Here," he pointed to a ramshackle building with a single wand lying on a pillow. A sign said Olivander's Wands.

"Hello. How may I help you?"

"We're here to get our wands."

"Ah yes, Draco Malfoy. Who is your companion?"

"Kate Riddle."

"Riddle..." A shadow seemed to cross his face, but he shook it off and smiled, "Well, why don't you try these wands out? Who would like to go first?"

"I would," Draco said bluntly.

Kate watched with amusement until he finally got his wand, a thirteen inch, nymph wood with unicorn hair.

"You're next. Here try this, an eight inch veela hair with a unicorn horn powder."

Kate gave it a swing. The windows smashed. She grimaced.

"No matter, no matter. Reparo!"

The windows fixed themselves. Kate tried several wands.

Finally he gave her a dragon scale, nymph wood, and unicorn hair wand.

Kate waved the wand around a ticklish warm feeling spread into her arms while Draco looked on sneeringly. Suddenly, a white light flared at the tip.

"There Miss Riddle! That's your wand!"

"My parents told me to tell you to bill them at Malfoy Manor. They're paying for her too."

Draco ignored Kate as the two walked out of Ollivander's Wands together. Kate was beginning to rather detest him.

"Do you have your wand?" Narcissa asked.

"Yes, Mum."

"Well, you two can go get some ice cream. I'll look at some robes for you two and Lucius will pick up the books. Oh where is that wretched Dobby?

"I'm here Mistress Malfoy!" an elf squeaked.

"What took you so long?"

"Dobby got stuck in some muggle house Mistress. N-no one saw Dobby."

"Good. Pick up Draco and Kate's other Hogwarts supplies and meet us at the gate of Knockturn Alley in an hour."

"Y-yes Mistress Malfoy."

"Well you children go off and enjoy yourself. Here are fifteen galleons each. Oh and Kate would you like an owl? We're getting Draco one and I thought you'd like one."

"Yes, Aunt Narcissa."

***

Kate followed Draco.

"I'd like three scoops of dark chocolate ice cream with nuts."

"That will be five sickles. What would you like young lady?"

"Three scoops of ice cream. One chocolate, one vanilla, and one strawberry."

"That will be four sickles. Coming right up."

"Oh hello," Draco said to a boy with green eyes and black hair, "Picking up your stuff for Hogwarts too I suppose."

"Yeah."

"My Mum's picking out robes for me at Madam Malkin's and my father getting my books and such. It's a shame first years can't have their own brooms. It would be much nicer if first years could be on the Quidditch teams.

"Quidditch?" the boy asked tentatively.

Draco frowned.

"You are one of us aren't you?"

"I'm a wizard, if that's what you mean."

"Oh, good. So what house do you suppose you'll be in? I think that I'll be in Slytherin. I'd leave if I was put into Hufflepuff, wouldn't you?"

"Mmm..."

A giant of a man waved to the boy.

"Who's that?"

"Oh, that's Hagrid. He works at Hogwarts."

"Isn't he some sort of servant? Looks evil, doesn't he?" Draco sneered.

"I think he's wonderful."

"What's your surname anyways?"

"I've got to go."

"Well see you on the train I suppose."

"Quidditch? Houses?" Kate asked.

"Quidditch is a game with brooms. There are four houses, Slytheryn, the greatest, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. You'll probably get put into Hufflepuff," he sneered, "Oh there's Parkinson and McNair."

"Hey Malfoy who's your friend?"

"Oh, she's my cousin Kate."

"I'm Pansy Parkinson."

"And I'm Eve McNair. We met on the bus. Hey, Malfoy have you seen Diedra Dolohov anywhere?"

"No. Here comes Crabbe and Goyle. They said they would be here today."

"Oh no! Dumb and dumber," Eve laughed.

"Hey Malfoy," Goyle grunted. "Who's that?"

"My cousin Kate."

Goyle was staring at Eve. She moved a little away and winced.

"They say Harry Potter's coming to school this year. Maybe he'll be one of us," Draco said.

"He's probably been raised by muggles too long. Kate, who are your parents?" Pansy asked.

"Um... I'm not sure..."

Pansy raised her eyebrows.

"She's my aunt's daughter. She's been living at the Queen's Orphanage for most of her life. I only have two aunts. Father won't tell me anything. Mum says it's none of my business."

"Mademoiselle Mardoe's Hair Parlour is across the street. We've got to get her looking like a proper Slytherin if that's the case."

Kate blinked, but complied. They crossed the street.

"You should deffinently get it layered," Pansy said matter of factly. "Chin length."

"Okay."

"That will be twelve galleons," said the hair stylist.

Kate paid her.

"Can I get my hair dyed red?" Eve asked.

"That will be sixteen galleons."

In about a half an hour their cuts were done and they looked in the mirror.

"Much better," proclaimed Pansy.

"Oh, I have to meet Narcissa and Lucius up at Knockturn Alley with Draco!" Kate proclaimed.

"Knockturn Alley?" Eve and Pansy proclaimed in unison.

"Yeah?"

"Only Dark Mages venture in there. My father ventures in there every once in awhile, but he can't ruin his good reputation with the Ministry," Eve proclaimed.

"Draco's waiting for you," Pansy said, "Well, see you on the train."

"Yeah, see you!" Eve said.

"Bye!"

"We're already five minutes late. Come on!"

"Where is this Knockturn Alley?"

"Just follow me."

Kate followed him through the streets and finally he stopped.

"Here we are," he whispered.

"Afraid, are you?" Kate asked feeling rather terrified herself.

"No. Father takes me in here all the time. There they are."

"Did you have a good time at the ice cream parlour?"

"Yes, Mum."

"Your Father's already in there. He's getting you two some beginner Dark Arts books just as a gift."

"Cool," Draco grinned.

Lucius came with two black books that had Beginner Dark Arts written in gold writing.

"Here you two go."

"Thanks," Kate said, mesmerized by the book.

"Well we have to get you back to that muggle place," Narcissa said, "It was nice meeting you... Oh I almost forgot. Your owl."

It had thick black mass of feathers and dark eyes. It hooted contentedly.

"What are you going to name it?" Lucius asked.

"I'll think I'll name her Morgaine."

"Excellent choice," Lucius said.

"Where's my owl?" Draco asked.

"Here, Draco," Narcissa said.

It was a gray owl with blue eyes. There were a few black feathers here and there.

"I'll name it Salazar after Slytherin himself," said Draco smugly.

They took the Knight Bus back to The Queen's Orphanage and Lucius said, "We'll meet you at King's Cross in a week's time at around 10:30. Good bye."

"Bye, and thanks," Kate called.

***

"Aunt Pam I'm back."

"It's near seven. You know you're supposed to be back at five."

"I'm sorry- things must have taken a little time."

"Excuses. Get upstairs and go to bed. I don't care if you've had dinner or not."

"Good night Aunt Pam."

The next day Kate looked through her new books. The Beginners Dark Magic intrigued her very much as she flipped through it. She smiled when she found the Face Disfigurement Curse. It made a welt the size of a watermelon on the side of someone's face. Beginner's Dark Magic became her favorite book filled with curses, hexes, and binding spells.

"Kate," a girl named Nan whined, "It's your turn to peel the potatoes."

"I'm busy Nan," Kate said threateningly.

"I'm telling Aunt Pam!"

Before the heavy set girl turned away Kate pointed her wand and shouted the welt curse.

The girl laughed and then her cheek started to welt up. Kate laughed.

"I think you can peel the potatoes now, Nan."

"Y-yes, Kate."

The story of Kate welting up Nan's face spread through out the orphanage and they steered clear of her. None of the girls would look her in the eye, but Kate kept doing magic in front of them.

When she wanted a drink,

"Accio orange juice!" she would shout a charm from her charms book.

For a week she ruled the orphanage doing magic, placing curses, until finally it was time for her to go to Hogwarts.
