Chapter 1: The Letter

"What do you want to do?"

"I don't know. You?"

"Uh... I draw a blank. I'm bored," Drea announced for the fiftieth time that day.

"What day is it?" Desirea asked.

"July twenty-seventh. Why?" Drea answered.

"No reason. Hey, what's that?" Desirea said. What looked like a large, feathery softball was soaring towards the girl's open window. Luckily for the "thing" the window was opened, seeing as the girl's room at Sunnyside Home for Troubled or Abandoned Youngsters had no air conditioning, and it was a stifling hot eighty-nine degrees. The "thing" landed right on the windowsill and both girls gasped.

"Wow. It's an--"

"Owl," Desirea finished for her best friend. She got up and strutted across the room, swishing her blonde-white hair over her shoulder in the process. Desirea was a very pretty girl. No, pretty was an understatement. She was gorgeous. Of course she was only eleven, but already she was fast becoming a beautiful young woman. Her almost white hair hung down to her elbows and was always perfect. She had a slim figure that allowed her to move fast and she was extremely agile. But, the strangest thing about her yet, was her odd steely gray eyes that flashed every time she was upset or when danger was near. Of course, Drea's eyes did the exact same thing. Every aspect of Desirea's body could be matched perfectly with Dreas's body. For you see, not only were they best friends but also identical twin sisters. Their mother had died shortly after giving birth to them, or so the orphanage managers told them. When they were little, they'd dream of someone, possibly their mother, coming to take them away to a castle where they could learn magic and become good little witches. But, now that the girls were grown up, they were too old to believe in things like that.

"What is it?" Drea said, accidentally knocking her stuffed dragon off her bed while getting up to join her sister. Drea had always loved her dragon. His name was Drake, and he was made of an odd shimmer silver material that she had never seen anywhere else. Desirea had one too, a shimmer forest green dragon, that she had named Drago. Drea would have rather had a nice red or gold dragon, but Drake's sentimental value was all that mattered to her. The managers had told the girls that their mother didn't have enough money to get them anything but those stuffed dragons before they were born, and they were the only thing that came close to helping the girls remember her, even if they could never remember her in the first place. Besides, both of the twins had an uncanny fascination with dragons, even though they knew they weren't real.

"Check this out!" Desirea said excitedly. "They even knew our exact location in the building!"

When Drea got close enough to stroke the owl's feathers and take the envelope from her sister, her mouth dropped at what is said. And Desirea was right, for it was addressed to:

Misses Desirea and Drea Maloy

Sunnyside Home for Troubled and Abandoned Youngsters

3 Kensington Drive

3rd Floor

3rd Room on the right

London, England

Drea stared for the longest time before Desirea, finally becoming too impatient, swiped the letter from her hands. Drea had to smile. She loved her sister dearly, but when it came time to practice the number one virtue, patience, Desirea would have failed everything all together.

Even though the girls were identical physically, they were complete opposites when it came to personality. Desirea was always outspoken and loud. She loved to be in charge and thought she could do anything. She was extremely ambitious and a prankster, and she'd do anything to have it her way.

But, when it came to Drea, there was a whole different story. Drea was patient, shy and quiet. She was a leader most of the time, and she was always helping her twin get out of sticky situations with her wits and charm.

"I think we should take it to Mrs. Lafayette," announced Drea.

"Oh, come on! Let's just open it now! I wanna see what it is!" exclaimed Desirea. "Besides, I don't think we'd get it back if we gave it to her. It's addressed to our exact location in the building, so that means whoever sent it knows a lot about us. Come on, Drea! This could be our ticket out of this dump!"

"You say that every time we get a piece of junk mail," Drea stated.

"Yeah. But this one is the one! I can feel it!"

"You say that, too," Drea repeated while running out of the room to get the owl some water. It looked dehydrated.

"Well, just because she doesn't think it's a good idea to open it doesn't mean I shouldn't," Desirea said to no one in particular. The owl stared at her. As Drea walked back into the room with a small bowl of water and a few crackers, Desirea opened the letter. Drea spotted her.

"Desirea! You weren't supposed to open it without me!" Drea whined.

"I thought you wanted to show Mrs. Lafayette first, so I was going to take a peek before she took it and never showed us again," Desirea stated.

"Give it!" Drea started, lunging at Desirea and landing on her bed, squishing Drake.

"AHHHH! Drake honey, are you all right?"

"Why do you talk to that bloody dragon like it understands you?" Desirea asked.

"Because sometimes, when I let the light shine into his eyes a certain way, it looks like he's alive," Drea said in her own defense. Desirea rolled her eyes and read the letter with wide eyes, looked at Drea, read it again, and shoved it into her sister's hands.

"You'd better read this," she said before plopping onto her own bed and grabbing Drago. Drea gave her a funny look, and then read the letter. Then she read it again. Then she read it again. Finally, she looked up at Desirea, who was looking at her like she expected her to do something. Finally, both girls stood up at the same time, looked at their dragons, then at each other, then the door.

"I think we should go see Mrs. Lafayette," both of them said at the same time.

'Five bottles of beer on the wall, five bottles of beer. Take one down, pass it around, four bottles of beer on the wall. Four bottles of beer on the wall, four bottles of beer.... I'm so bored,' was Draco Malfoy's only though while banging his head on his desk. Suddenly, he heard the sound of a beak clicking against his window. He walked over to the window, pushed it open, and watched as his eagle owl landed gracefully on his bed.

"Hullo, Zeus," he said casually while picking up the letter he had dropped on his pillow. The owl clicked it beak expectantly.

"I don't have anything for you. You could try the kitchens, though." The owl nipped Draco affectionately on the ear, then took of through the window it came.

'Hmmm... Hogwarts letter. Yay. A ticket out of this dump.' Not that Malfoy Manor was a dump; it was just the most boring place to spend your life.

Draco got up and walked to his full-length mirror, inspecting himself carefully. His white-blonde hair was slicked back and shinny as ever, and his steel gray eyes stared back, full of pure boredom.

"Ooh, my life is fun," he mused. "Hey, Dragon, I'm going downstairs to show mother and father my acceptance letter. Want to come?" He asked the little green and silver dragon that was snoozing on a pile of robes in the corner. The little stuffed toy raised its head with half open eyes and snorted. (A/N: He named his stuffed dragon "Dragon". How original!)

"Didn't think so. I'll be back up in a few hours," he said before exiting the room. The little fake reptile gave a pleased wink before letting some smoke out of its nostrils and falling back into his peaceful doze.
