"I tried to let him down gently, Hermione, I tried!" sobbed Ginny.

The two girls were in the room they shared while at the Burrow. Ginny was crying heartily into Hermione's shoulder, having just had a row with Harry.

"Tell me what happened, Ginny"

So she did...

Ginny walked into the living room where Harry sat alone. She cleared her throat to get his attention, and felt no butterflies in her stomach whatsoever as he looked up at her with those intensely green eyes. He smiled, and gestured for her to sit down. She did so, trying to convince herself that this was the right thing to do.

After Dumbledore's death, even though Harry had tried to distance himself from her, they had ended up back together. But that was three years ago. Ginny had helped Harry destroy another Horcrux, but even though he seemed to love her as much as he ever did, something had changed. Her heart didn't skip a beat when she looked at him anymore, and she actually had secretly begun going out with someone else now. His name was Mark Evans, but he and Harry weren't related, thank God. Ginny remembered how Lily Potter's maiden name had been Evans, but after she had questioned Mark thoroughly about the topic and had come up with negatives the whole time, she had let it drop. Ginny had begun going out with him a few months ago, and had lost her virginity to him. She loved him more than she had ever loved Harry, but Harry was still her friend, and she was not a mean person, and was trying to let him go gently. It didn't go as well as she had planned, however.

She tried to explain how he was still like a brother to her, it wasn't that she didn't care about him anymore, it was just that she couldn't be his girlfriend anymore. Harry had stiffened. "What?" He was bewildered. What had happened? Where had it gone wrong? He thought he hadn't seen the usual sparkle in Ginny's eyes lately, but he had pushed it out of his mind. He rose from his chair, trying to keep himself under control, but it wasn't working. She was his first love, how could she do this to him? What he done to deserve this? She had helped him so much, they had destroyed a Horcrux together. He saved her life when he was twelve years old, for God's sake! He wanted to have her back so badly, and was suddenly swept with not so much as a ripple but a tidal wave of anger and grief. He suddenly couldn't help himself and began shouting at her. She rose off her chair and replied angrily. Ron entered the room and saw Harry and Ginny were standing five feet apart, screaming at each other. His mouth fell open in shock. Harry looked at him, swore, and turned away. Ron didn't have anything to complain about, he and Hermione were perfect for each other, like everyone knew they would be. Except, Harry thought, that everyone thought he and Ginny would be perfect for each other, too. And they had been for a while, but that was over now.

Harry suddenly turned and sprinted up to the bedroom he occupied at the Burrow, slammed the door, and locked it magically. He didn't know how he could go on. His heart was broken, and he felt an immense emptiness inside. He couldn't stem the flood of tears cascading down his cheeks, so he simply let them come.
